Early Life and Educational Background

Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla was born on 12 June 1955, in what is currently known as Oyo State to Late Chief Thomas Olakunle Otunla and Late Madam Wuraola Ayanbola Alake Otunla (Nee Ayansiji), both of Irawo Owode in the present-day Atisbo Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Jonah is the last of his mother’s five children. The Otunla family was built on the foundations of humility, character, integrity, faith, and love—all of which were Niyi’s guiding light throughout his time on Mother Earth. More so, he was privileged to be from a learned family.

He had his secondary school education at Baptist High School, Saki where he obtained the West African School Certificate (WAEC) in 1972 at the age of 17. He proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Financial Accounting.

In 1986, at age 31 he became a Chartered Accountant but received the fellowship of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria 12 years later (1998).

Career

Jonah Ogunniyi began his career in August 1980 with Unilever working as an accountant.  He left the organization after working there for nine years, to join the Oyo State Civil Service as Chief Internal Auditor,  the same year he became the Director of Finance.

Moving forward, in June 1989,  he was appointed Accountant General of the State, a position which he held until March 2004 when he was transferred to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.

On 28, 2011, he was appointed the Accountant General of the Federation by His Excellency Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former President of Nigeria. On 12 June, after attaining the mandatory age of  60 years, Ogunniyi retired honorably from the Civil Service.

Home front, Mr. Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was married to Mrs. Francisca Abeke Otunla. Together, they both have three children.

Their names are Dapo (married to Funke Otunla), Dolapo (married to Yemi Adeyemi), and Doyinsola (married to Niyi Olatawura). Before the time of death, Jonah Otunla was blessed with his three children and many grandchildren surrounding his table.

“I can tell you that he died in the hours between Sunday, June 16, and Monday, June 17”, revealed an insider source. While the cause of his death remains a mystery, a family source close to the Irawo, ATISBO local government born former accountant general of Oyo, revealed that;

“Otunla died in his sleep. He slept and didn’t wake up. He still opened the door for someone at 5:00 AM  this morning. And went back to sleep. And didn’t wake up.” There have been several speculations on the internet concerning the death of Sir Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla.
