Early Life and Educational Background
Ireti Kingibe was born on June 2, 1954 in Kan State, Nigeria. She began her education at Emotan Preparatory School in 1966. She then attended Queen’s College in Lagos and completed her secondary education at Washington Irving High School between 1970 and 1973.
She earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota, studying there from 1975 to 1980.
Career
Kingibe launched her career as a Quality Control Engineer with Bradley Precast Concrete Inc. from 1978 to 1979. She then worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation in the Design unit as an engineer from 1979 to 1991.
Returning to Nigeria for her mandatory service in 1981, she served as a Project Supervisor at the Nigerian Air Force base in Ikeja, Lagos. In 1982, Kingibe joined the New Nigeria Construction Company in Kaduna as a planning engineer.
She left in 1985 to work as a consultant for Belsam Limited. From 1990 to 1994, she was the regional engineer for Lodigiani Nigeria Limited in Lagos. Currently, she is a senior partner at Kelnic Associates in Abuja.

Politics
Kingibe’s political journey began in 1990 when she was appointed Adviser to the National Chairman of the now-defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP). In 2003, she ran for the FCT senatorial seat as a candidate for the All Nigeria People’s Party, and in 2006, she joined the People’s Democratic Party.
However, she moved to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2014 due to political differences and ran for the senatorial seat in 2015, eventually withdrawing. In 2022, Kingibe joined the Labour Party and became their FCT Senatorial candidate for the 2023 Nigerian elections, which she won.
Prior to the elections, she promised to donate her basic salary to a special fund to address infrastructure deficits in rural areas of the capital. On August 8, 2023, she was appointed chairman of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs of the 10th Senate.
Controversy
On February 28, 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Kingibe the winner of the Federal Capital Territory seat. The announcement, made by returning officer Sanni Saka, was met with disagreement from other political party agents who refused to sign the result sheet.
Kingibe held a press conference asserting that INEC had no grounds to cancel her election victory and claimed that opposition parties had bribed electoral officers. She also alleged an attempt to rig the election and mentioned that the Gwarinpa collation center was attacked by thugs who destroyed result sheets.
